PROPOSAL AT A GLANCE
Proposal name:
EMTUS - ElectroMagneTic Uncoated Sensor
Subject:
The purpose of the project is the development of an uncoated sensor with a wide bandwidth of vision in the electromagnetic (EMT) spectrum. Such a sensor is expected to fulfil multiple roles in the fields of environment, well-being, safety and security.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Proposal Outline:
The main goal of the project is the development of new sensor principle, capable of monitoring a wide bandwidth of the EMT spectrum. The required bandwidth is to be determined by extensive research in the field of spectrography. The sensor principle could be a chip that directly monitors EMT radiation thereby advancing photonic/electronic convergence, and exploiting innovative sensing principles.
To ensure the competitiveness of a sensor build around a new photonic sensor component, it is necessary to optimize the cost price of such a component, given that the rest of the sensor (print, housing etc.) won’t differ much from existing designs. This can be done by research in new materials and developing more efficient fabrication methods (including mounting and packaging).
To process the expected analogue signal from the developed sensor component, digital signal processing is required. By implementing different digital filters and methods of mathematical analysis, the sensor can be customized to monitor anything that registers inside the defined bandwidth of the EMT spectrum.
The expected multi functionality of the sensor will make many existing sensor technologies obsolete. This include flame-, smoke-, gas-, temperature- and sparkdetectors.
