PROPOSAL AT A GLANCE

Proposal name:
Sodgets: Social and Collaborative Semantics-powered Objects
Subject:
Current objects and devices generally lack the required amount of intelligence to undertake joint and collaborative tasks in order to help users in their everyday activities.

Higher levels of intelligence in environments can be achieved if devices are able to create a society of networked entities, with public “community” services, etiquette, free access to information sources (such as sensors, or Internet gateways), and common enabling infrastructures (for intra-communication as well as for inter-societies communication), where the main good to exchange is information.

These societies have a more dynamic approach than traditional information networks, since devices may join or leave the society at any moment, maybe affecting the services or infrastructures provided, or altering the balance at some extent.

Just as the Web 2.0 has provided a paradigm to boost collaboration among people sharing experiences and beliefs, and resulting in millions of new information sources that help humans to better interpret reality, it is possible to port this model to boost “social collaboration” among digital objects.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Proposal Outline:
This project aims at the creation of an embedded software platform for enabling new social and collaborative features in digital objects that can help shape this kind of highly dynamic interconnected societies of devices.

The main challenge of this research is to demonstrate how promoting sociability, collaboration and “community feeling” in individual devices, intelligent and adaptive environments that meet users’ needs are spontaneously created.

There are several characteristics at the core of this research:

    • Semantic modeling of information.
    • Social behavior.
    • Trust models.
    • Emergent intelligence.
    • Adaptability at the society.
    • Adaptability at the individual.

From a technical point of view, these social digital objects must feature:
    • Lightweight (embedded) hardware and software platforms.
    • Energy-efficient but expressive communication protocols and bearers.
    • Security and trust mechanisms.
    • Embedded semantic reasoning.
    • Distributed knowledge spaces.
    • Paths for accessing both local information (through deployed sensors) and global information (the Internet).
    • Services marketplace
Keywords:
social devices, collaborative devices, semantic, intelligent environments, ubiquitous computing
