PROPOSAL AT A GLANCE

Proposal name:
OpenGeoservices: An Open Platform for the Discovery and Dynamic Composition of Services based on Geospatial Information
Subject:
Development of an open platform for the discovery, advertising, personalisation and dynamic composition of services based on geospatial information.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Proposal Outline:
Today it is not possible to create novel geoservices (other services than spatial queries and location) by means of composing other already existing services, using dynamic composition of services, and automatic services discovery. Over the last several years the Open Geospatial Consortium has developed specifications for enabling the creation and interoperability of geospatially enabled services. These specifications include, but are not limited to Web Map Server (WMS), Web Feature Server (WFS) and Web Coverage Server (WCS). The specifications proposed by OGC are independent of the Web Services specifications developed by the general computer industry, and they do not provide the functionality required for building loosely coupled distributed systems.

The main goal of the OpenGeoservices project is to develop an open platform, based on open source middleware and components, for the discovery, advertising, personalisation and dynamic composition of services based on geospatial information. The project will address the issue of the integration of OGC services and Web services, providing a standard way of describing, deploying, finding and calling geoservices across the Internet.

Secondary goals of the project are:

  • A proposal for the integration of WS and OGC standards for the discovery and composition of geoservices
  • An architecture proposal for the consolidation of spatial infrastructures and the integration with other information systems
  • Tools and techniques for data abstraction and integration with spatial information
  • Middleware for the deployment of a new generation of services based on spatial information
  • Example geoservices for a pilot experience in a real environment
Keywords:
Service and software architectures, open source software, geographical information systems, SOA, WS standars, OGC standars.
