Proposal name:
OverNet: Overlay Networks for services architectures
Subject:
The purpose of this project is to design overlay networks over the Internet that dissociate the physical and services architectures, to create optimized logical networks providing various specific services.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Proposal Outline:
Overlay networks over the Internet are intelligent scalable, adaptable fabrics that can be deployed easily : VPNs, MPLS and G-MPLS networks, P2P architectures, VLAN, CDN, Multicast, RON (Resilient Overlay Networks), OverQoS, IRC, even including overlay management networks. This is a way to improve, optimize and secure the data distribution to fulfil new needs by building new communication and services models. New overlay architectures for heterogeneous systems improve the performance and reliability of the routing and more generally of the overall services by controlling the robustness of the physical infrastructure. It is essential to design reconfigurable networks to interconnect adaptable nodes. The Internet will: - Adapt itself easily to any new emerging technology or infrastructure (for instance, RFID labels and localization system like Galileo) that come in connection with it; - Provide a reliable and high-performance infrastructure while controlling the planning of wired and wireless networks, optimizing the routing and proposing a multilayer protection (IP over WDM), etc; - Integrate a increasing number of connected nodes (frequently mobile) that creates a larger need for robust and fast auto-healing infrastructure; - Manage the security of heterogeneous interconnected equipment (this include the design and the operation of features to guaranty the service assurance and availability); - Support of dynamic reconfigurations and updates so that the infrastructure can face new threats.
