PROPOSAL AT A GLANCE
Proposal name:
Self Organized Mobility and Broadband Access (SOMBA)
Subject:
Project SOMBA indents to create and implement new technologies for supporting the convergence of heterogeneous mobile and broadband networks along with the management of network infrastructures.
Introduction
Self Organized mobility can be divided into two main categories wireless metropolitan area networks (WMAN) and wireless sensor networks (WSN).
Wireless metropolitan area network is a seamless broadband internet network. The seamless network provides bandwidth control, roaming, automatic configuration, push content functionality, universal access methods, radius services and additional access security. Customers have access to true mobile broadband connectivity and anyone with a computer, notebook, PDA or mobile phone which is wireless enabled, can use the broadband connectivity services. With the help of one the standard features of the network services manager, customers can simple start a wireless enabled device, select the network, activate the internet-browser and sign-up automatically by using a credit card or enter the user password combination.
Complementary to WMANs, Wireless sensor networks are expected to play an important role in our society. We can envisage a physical world with pervasive, sensor-rich, network-interconnected computers and devices embedded in the environment. The characteristics of ubiquitous devices make wireless networks the natural solution for their interconnection. Due to their flexibility, easy deployment, low cost, and other properties, ad hoc networks and wireless sensor networks are expected to be the basic building blocks of pervasive computing environments.
Ad hoc networks are (often temporary) self-organizing systems of wireless mobile nodes (MANETs, VANETs,). Devices can thus communicate in areas without a preexisting communication infrastructure, or when such an infrastructure needs to be extended.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Proposal Outline:
The project is break down into several Work Packages:
- Research and implementation of protocols and algorithms in the area of self-organization, self-healing incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) techniques.
- Research and implementation of protocols and algorithms for quality of service (QoS) in application (distribution of services) layer, IP layer (v4 and v6) and MAC-layer (IEEE 802.11a/b/g, 802.16d/e, 802.15, 802.20).
- Research and implementation of protocols and algorithms for secure connections in ad-hoc heterogeneous environments.
- Research and integration of existing roaming/authentication/billing systems, operating as bridges among different networks.
- Design of network architectures based on hybrid network concepts that integrate wireless wide area networks, wireless LANS (IEEE 802.11a/b/g, IEEE 802.15 and IEEE 802.16, Bluetooth with fiber-based Internet backbone.
- Design of an advanced Network Management System (NMS) tailored to WMANs and WSNs specific demands incorporating health and performance managment, configuration and security management, service management and policy management. NMS will be based on recent open standards inlcuding Web Services and J2EE technologies facilitating interoperability, scalability and extendability.
