PROPOSAL AT A GLANCE

Proposal name:
Global Automated Transport System (GATS)
Subject:
GATS is an innovative concept for a driverless, co-operative traffic management and control transport system, capable of “driving” millions of vehicles optimally, simultaneously and automatically over a virtually unlimited geographic region, while at the same time tending to the requirements of each individual vehicle and its passengers in real time.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Proposal Outline:
The development of the concept will deliver advanced, reliable, fast and secure vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication for new functionalities, real-time traffic management and very high level of support to active safety systems in vehicles and to the passengers.

Expected benefits:

1. Improved safety through elimination of most accidents caused by the human factor and by real-time monitoring and malfunction handling of road and vehicle safety conditions - strong contribution towards the objective of reducing road fatalities by 50% and later on to realize “zero-accident” scenarios.
2. Open, interoperable and scalable system architecture that allows easy upgrade and implementation in small contained areas such as airports and campuses, as well as in larger areas such as local, national and international road networks
3. Greater transport efficiency, better utilizing of existing infrastructure and managing varying demands dynamically in real time.
4. Large scale traffic management optimisation which will contribute significantly to reduction in the energy consumption and congestion in road transport.
5. Improving quality of life by reducing congestion, trip duration and pollution and by eliminating driving-associated stress and fatigue.
6. Universality, very high flexibility and adaptability to a large variety of applications, roads, vehicles, countries, and regulations while integrating all of these elements into ONE COHERENT UNIT, laying the foundation for a common pan-European architecture, standards and deployment model for cooperative transport systems.
