PROPOSAL AT A GLANCE

Proposal name:
A coordination & Context-Aware Middleware for the Ubiquitous environment
Subject:

Our main objective under this project is to

Develop a co-ordination and context-aware middleware using Ubiquitous Semantic Space and Ontology based Context Aware Environment for ubiquitous computing in the context of AAL (Ambient Assisted Living).

Brief on the Ubiquitous Semantic Space:

Ubiquitous Computing poses the challenge of increased communication, context-awareness and functionality. In a highly dynamic and weekly connected ubiquitous environment, continuous access to the network (synchronous communication) is very difficult. So it’s necessary to go for asynchronous communication using tuple space. Tuple space offer a coordination infrastructure for communication between autonomous entities by providing a logically shared memory along with data persistence, transactional security as well as temporal and spatial decoupling properties that make it desirable for distributed systems such as Ubiquitous Computing.

In order to automate the task and the system to be intelligent, context awareness is a must. This can be achieved by using semantic web technology. Hence we develop a middleware framework for Ubiquitous Environment using Ubiquitous Semantic Space. Ubiquitous Semantic Space brings together tuple space, semantic web technologies and ubiquitous Computing.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Proposal Outline:

Objectives:

Our project will build a ubiquitous framework upon a highly dynamic and weakly connected infrastructure of typical AAL services like:

  • remote monitoring of activity and physical well being
  • adaptive interfacing to ICT for people with disabilities
  • responsive and proactive environment which enables easy communication with health care professionals, friends, family and wider community.
  • allow the usage of advanced, user friendly, secure and privacy enhanced services for health-care and for disease prevention

The AAL systems consist of very different devices and sensors, which dynamically enter and leave the system voluntarily or are forced to by breaking communication links or energy insufficiencies.

Nonetheless the consistency and availability of semantic data needs to be guaranteed, at least as much as possible. Hence, the computation environments demand a very flexible infrastructure: flexible in coordination and interaction, but also very flexible with respect to the syntax and semantics of the exchanged data.

Therefore this project will, through the usage of a ubiquitous semantic space and the development of a context aware toolkit, allow to build a context-aware infrastructure specifically designed for AAL services and devices.

PARTNER PROFILE SOUGHT

Required skills and Expertise:

We will be focussing mainly on the middleware development as stated above.

for the project to be in place it needs to have  apart from the context aware middleware stated above:

a.  the infrastructure - Setting up Intelligent Room with RFID and Sensors for demonstrating Context Toolkit,

Ubiquitous Semantic Space and Health Care Application to  serve as a prototype for demonstration

b.  Healthcare application which includes - development of healthcare SOA services, building context awareness

    and integration of the same

c. the necessary providers viz: health care centres etc

Description of work to be carried out by the partner(s) sought:

The deliverables of this centre for the development of coordination & context aware middleware includes

A. Middleware development using Ubiquitous Semantic pace and includes development of context aware toolkit

  • Development of context aware toolkit which includes context builder, context-service modeler, context toolkit manager
  • Development of an ubiquitous semantic space
  1. Semantic Space server which includes Communication Module , Tuple Management Module, Query Module, Ontology repository management service, Fault tolerance module
  2. Semantic space client interface

We need the partners to take care of :

a.  the infrastructure - Setting up Intelligent Room with RFID and Sensors for demonstrating Context Toolkit,

Ubiquitous Semantic Space and Health Care Application to  serve as a prototype for demonstration

b. Healthcare application which includes - development of healthcare SOA services, building context awareness
