PROPOSAL AT A GLANCE

Proposal name:
ADRFID
Subject:

The most important goal of the project is the development of Intelligent Transport System (ITS) integrated solutions aimed at assuring the prevention of the risks induced by the handling and transporting of dangerous commodities: the solution is meant as a “variable resolution” monitoring which depends on parameters such as the nature of the territories passed through and the type and distribution of the people present. The project seeks to develop a solution which coordinates the various solutions of network, equipment and enabled services to allow new process models to be defined and test-built in order to achieve the preset targets, which may be summarized as transportation safety (responsibility of the transport companies) and environmental safety (responsibility of local Public Administration), both of which are achieved, as far as possible, mainly by preventive measures. Bearing this in mind, the project will be subjected to a field trial, applying it:§ to the phases of loading the containers of dangerous commodities on the trucks;§ to checking the passage of the vehicles over the territory (mandatory/prohibited areas, new regulations for tunnel transit, etc.;§ to handling the arrival of the vehicle at the destination company;§ to a specific intervention by the competent organizations (WWF, National security, etc.) in case of an accident. A further aspect related to safety in transportation is preventing/safeguarding goods marked with the RFID tag against theft or loss. The project also intends to evaluate the possibility of extending the technological and operating methods identified in order to render them applicable to solving other problems as well (for example, city garbage clearance) provided they can be related to the macro-model indicated in the solution.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Proposal Outline:
The scope of the project is the development of Intelligent Transport System (ITS) integrated solutions aimed at assuring the prevention of the risks induced by the handling and transporting of dangerous commodities: the solution is meant as a “variable resolution” monitoring which depends on parameters such as the nature of the territories passed through, the type and distribution of the people present. Attention will be paid in evaluating, developing and testing an ITS system based on “Autonomic Logistics” principles, applied to the handling and control of the transportation and storage of dangerous commodities.
The main idea is to plan and develop solutions oriented to technical, functional, geographic and intermodal systemic interoperability taking into account also certification issues related to A.D.R (International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road) appliance.
The reference technologies include among others RFID, Galileo and ontology based information systems.
The applicability scenario is “Corridor 5”. Corridor 5 is a rail and road network, representing the major east-west artery linking Lisbon (Portugal) and Kiev (Ukraine), passing through Spain, France, Italy, Slovenia, Hungary. It is meant to facilitate the exchange of goods, persons, oil and other energy supplies, and telecommunications systems between Europe and the Balkan countries.
