PROPOSAL AT A GLANCE

Proposal name:
Improving Accessibility of deaf community by the use of ICT and sign language
Subject:
The goal of this project is to contribute in the improvement of e-accessibility of deaf by the use of Technologies of Information and Communication. The objective was to design and to develop for this community a collaborative environment based in sign language for communication through the Web. This tool would permit the automatic interpretation of texts in visual-gestural-spatial language by using avatar technology.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Proposal Outline:
The purpose of our project is the development of tools to improve the accessibility of deaf people to the new technologies of information and communication. These tools can help developers to make an accessible applications or websites, create a tools dedicated to deaf to facilitate their integration in the society, or create tools to non deaf person to allow them to learn sign language.

Now we have developed the kernel of this project named Websign. Websign is a Web-Service which allows the translation of written text to sign language. Contrary to the popular belief Sign Language is not universal for this raison Websign is a multi-community system, each community have their own dictionary of sign, their own web-interface in their written language and an administrator.

To facilitate the build of the dictionary we have developed a collaborative approach that allows the insertion of words into the dictionary. Every user can propose sign to be added to the dictionary of his community. The proposition of signs should be validated by the administrator of the community before it’s insertion into the dictionary.

We have also developed many applications using Websign, like a chat tools for deaf and a generator of courses for deaf pupil to teach and learn sign language.
