PROPOSAL AT A GLANCE

Proposal name:
A platform for community-based open software development
Subject:
Open development has many advantages including decreased cost, higher reliability, higher quality, vendor independence, and the like. These advantages are magnified when the size of the developer and user communities increase. This on the other hand brings with it problems related coordination of developer and user communities in development activities, road mapping and release management, central versus distributed design, democratization of development process, life cycle management, evolution over time, dynamic composition, security and trust. This project aims to develop a platform for community-based open software development addressing the above issues.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Proposal Outline:
The aim of the project is to develop a platform which will facilitate community-based open software development. The key research issue posed in this project is complexity problems in the development process arising from the increased size of developer and user communities.

The specific research objectives of the project are the following:
-Investigate existing community-based open software development strategies, models, processes, tools, and projects from the perspective of handling complexity arising from the size of development and user communities,
-Develop models for community-based open development addressing complexity related issues including road mapping and release management, central versus distributed design, democratization of development process, life cycle management, evolution over time, dynamic composition, security and trust.
-Develop an architecture for a platform for community-based open development to investigate the above issues
-Develop a prototype for community-based open development platform
-Validate by trial of the proposed models for community-based open development addressing complexity related issues mentioned above.

A platform will be developed as a proof of concept.

The technical work to be carried out in the project may be decomposed into work packages as follows: investigation of state-of-the art in community-based open development, development of models for addressing complexity issues in large scale community-based open development, development of an architecture and a prototype for a platform to validate the proposed models, validation of models by trials.
Keywords:
